How many tanks do I need?

Maybe you’re building a new home and not sure what your set up should be for propane. Or perhaps you’re moving into a newly purchased home and wanting to convert to propane but not sure on your usage quite yet. A question we hear often from customers in this situation is “How many propane tanks do I need?”.

The size tank you need depends on the number of propane appliances in your home and how you use them. If you’re set up properly, the size tank set for your home should be able to serve all of your propane appliances and provide ample storage capacity for your specific usage. To further expand on this, let’s take a look at our most common tanks we set up for our customers.

100 Gallon Tank

Our most common and popular tank size for homeowners. Most commonly used for pool heating, tankless water heaters, fireplaces, cooking, and whole home heating for average sized homes.

250 or 330 Gallon Tank

These options are both for fair to average usage. These can serve your homes energy needs by whole home heating, generators, cooking and for multiple appliances.

500 Gallon Tank

The 500 gallon tank is another fairly common size propane tank for a residential home with above average propane use. It is often used for heating, generator powering, cooking, pool heating and more. The primary benefit to this larger tank is the longevity of your propane without having to get refilled. When you buy more gallons of propane, you’ll typically see a slightly lower price for buying in bulk. Typically, a home with a 500 gallon tank will be 2,500 square feet and use propane for multiple appliances. This tank can be installed above or below ground per code and per the customer’s preference.

1,000 Gallon Tank

Much like the 500 gallon tank, the uses are almost identical yet it’s twice as big. This size tank is for the above average user as well. This tank is typically recommended for residential homes of up to 4,500 square feet or commercial buildings. 1,000 gallon tanks are most commonly used and popular for agricultural uses.
